LEARY TOPS MODIFIEDS, SUPER MODS TO HELLIWELL SATURDAY AT MONADNOCK

Monadnock Speedway Saturday, July 5, event story

WINCHESTER, N.H. – Tyler Leary won a wild one Saturday at Monadnock Speedway, topping the 40-lap 604 Modified main event on the high banks of the storied quarter-mile oval.

In the visiting SMAC series winged Super Modifieds, George Helliwell rocketed to victory. It was his second series victory in a row and came on a night when entrants turned in scorching 12 second laps and less, the fastest by Hayden Grenier, whose 11.078 in-race gem set a new track record.

Second-generation ace Dylan Zullo roared to the top of the Super Street points parade with his second victory of the summer Saturday, and John Fultz was strong in topping the Mini Stocks. John Fultz rocked the Mini Stock, Kyle Kenny won for the third time this summer in the Pure Stocks, and Maya Bell scored her first career Young Guns victory Saturday.

Brad Zahensky and Brian Chapin led the Allstates Materials Group 604 Modifeds to the green Saturday, but chaos broke out quickly when Chapin lost control of his #44 on the opening-lap with an eight-car crash along the backstretch sending a half-dozen potent open-wheelers to the pits, five quickly done for the night, but Tyler Leary able to make quick repairs and return.

Among the casualties was three-time winner and points leader Brian Robie, whose 13th place finish would leave him still eleven markers atop the leaderboard, with Saturday’s runner-up Andrew Brousseau, closing in fast.
Leary, second to Zahesnky, when Todd Patnode’s motor grenade on lap 26, then took charge and held Brousseau off to score the victory, praising his pit crew for their work in returning the bruised Modified to the track. Brian Chapin was third on the night.

Hayden Grenier, in only his second outing in a Super Modified, had opened a massive lead in Saturday’s SMAC 50-lap main event. But contact with the back of a turn-two lapper on the 31st circuit spun the leader and handed the top spot to super star George Helliwell.

Helliwell, coming off a win at Claremont, came from 12th on Saturday’s starting grid to lead the final 19 laps and win ahead of Matt Seavey and Matt Tinker. Helliwell set fast time in qualifying at 11.226 seconds.

After three early cautions, the Twin State Truck Services Super Streets put on a show. Hillary Renaud led the first dozen laps, then giving way to Dylan Zullo, who blasted off to win by a country mile, leaving a great battle for positions far behind him.

Erik Smith is still winless in the Super Streets but if Saturday’s rock-solid performance is an indicator, that elusive win number one can’t be far away. Smith was second Saturday, holding off last week’s winner, Zach Zilinski, for the runner-up hardware.

Jimmy Zellman led the first 14 laps of the Brattleboro Towing and Recovery Pure Stock main event but Kyle Kenny, firing from row three, was on a mission. The Rutland, VT speedster low-lined through turn two on the 15th circuit and then soared off into another dimension for his third win of the season.

Defending speedway Pure Stock champ Andrea St. Amour was best-of-the-rest Saturday, coming home second, and rising star Markus O’Neil impressed in third. Zellman was fourth in the 25-lapper, and rookie star Kyle Begos was fifth.
In the Fabian Fuels Mini Stocks, John Fultz took the lead from Cameron Sontag on lap three and then held off the all-out challenge of last week’s winner, Owen Zilinski, to win a thriller. Sontag held strong for third, just ahead of hot shoe Louie Maher.

Maya Bell scored her first career victory in the Doug’s Auto Body Young Guns feature, but most likely not in the way she’d planned. Race leader Sofia Rego and challenger Hunter Duquette tangled heavily atop turn two on the eleventh lap, handing the lead to Bell, who ran out the race to take the checkers ahead of Ella Grabowski. Rego was credited with third on the night.

Monadnock Speedway returns to action next Saturday, July 12, with
the exciting round two of the 2025 Teddy Bear Pools Triple Crown Series. The 604 Modifieds will compete atop a full card of NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series action. Post time is 6 p.m
